“I don’t understand what you do”

“I don’t understand what you do”

Good.

Actually, that might be one of my favourite responses when I tell people I work in Futures & Foresight.

Because Futures can sound abstract. Something happening somewhere in the background, involving distant horizons, scenarios and predictions about what the world might look like decades from now.

But we're all working with the future, every day.

When an individual considers changing career, moving somewhere new or making a decision without knowing exactly how it will unfold, they're making assumptions about the future.

Organisations do the same.

When they decide what to invest in, how to respond to change, what their people might need next or which direction to take, they're already working with the future.

Futures & Foresight simply makes that relationship more intentional.

It isn't about predicting what will happen.

It's about noticing what is changing, questioning the assumptions we're carrying, exploring what could happen and using that insight to make better decisions today.

And that's where my own work gets particularly interesting.

I work where Futures & Foresight meets people, systems and change.

Because the future isn't something that happens to us one day.

We're already participating in it.

So when somebody tells me:

“I don't understand what you do.”

I don't mind at all.

In fact, that's usually where the interesting conversation begins.

Because perhaps the better question is:

What future are you already making decisions about?
