Let’s talk inequalities within the workplace, is your business closing that gap?
On 25th April 2022, The Office for National Statistics released updated information on the UK’s disability pay gap.
The median pay gap for disabled vs non-disabled employees was 13.8% in 2021, and 14.1% prior 2019 prior to the Coronavirus pandemic.
This research is a well needed wake-up called on inequalities still present within the workplace.
Disabled employees with autism as their primary diagnosis had a wider pay gap in 2021 than disabled individuals with other types of main impairment, having a median pay of 33.5% less than non-disabled employees without a long-lasting health condition.
It is crucial employers have policies relating to equal opportunities and workplace diversity; this should tie into wider policies and procedures, confirming a zero-tolerance stance against any form of bullying, harassment, and discrimination.
The impact of disabilities within the workplace goes beyond the need for reasonable adjustments as the latest figures show disabled employees also face issues which it come to pay parity against vs non-disabled employees.
Is your business doing everything it can to tackle this pay gap and make employment more accessible?
